The Church of Saint Lazarus stands as one of the most significant Byzantine monuments in Larnaca, built in the 9th century and reconstructed in the 17th century. It is renowned for its stunning architecture featuring four domes and double columns, as well as an ornate interior with a golden pulpit and vibrant icons. This church holds deep religious importance as it is said to preserve the tomb of Saint Lazarus, the biblical figure who lived in Cyprus after resurrection and served as Bishop of Kition (ancient Larnaca). The name Larnaca itself is derived from “larnax,” meaning sarcophagus, symbolizing the saint’s burial place. Visitors can explore the crypt with Lazarus’s sarcophagus and admire Byzantine artworks and relics. The church is a spiritual and cultural centerpiece, hosting significant religious processions especially before Orthodox Easter, making it a pivotal pilgrimage site.
